Shearing for Animal Welfare and Biosecurity

Best Practice for biosecurity and animal welfare at shearing

Protecting animal welfare is enshrined in the organic standards, and it is recommended that biosecurity on organic farms is maintained at the highest level to protect livestock from introduced pests and disease. Reducing the spread of pests and disease at farm entry point reduces the need for treatment. This saves on the cost of veterinary medicines as well as the cost of labour time.

SOPA would encourage Members to assess their practices and planning at shearing time, in light of new guidance published in Spring 2025.
