Organic Spring Store Sales of Cattle - Price Summaries

23rd April 2009

This week has seen the Dumfries Mart and Thainstone Mart Organic Spring Sales of Organic Store Cattle.

Trade was brisk at both sales with strong, well fleshed animals through the ring. Stock have mostly wintered well and organic buyers were keen to take advantage of the quality animals.

There is a clear threshold below which buyers will not go - for instance a AAX heifer of 11 months and 187kgs achieved £480 in the ring at Thainstone. Most of the animals were medium to heavy continentals and those buyers looking for lighter animals went home empty handed.

However, with prime organic beef currently at 330ppkgdw, finishers need to look carefully at their costs to achieve a margin.
