NEWS Organics recognised by CIWF for Animal Welfare

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) have published a report comparing animal welfare in quality assurance schemes in the UK.

Organic standards by SOPA and Soil Association score particularly well as does the RSPCA assurance schemes.

SOPA, SA and RSPCA offer SIGNIFICANT WELFARE BENEFITS when scored on

  • the animal's environment,
  • husbandry,
  • stockmanship,
  • handling & slaughter, genetics and breeding and
  • auditing.

This is clear recognition of the kind approach that organic livestock farmers are asked to meet in the organic standards.  Based on the Five Freedoms, organic livestock management respects natural behaviour, demands a high standard of stockmanship and providing the right conditions for nutrition, shelter and avoiding distress.

The SOPA auditing process pays close attention to the welfare of organic animals and we ask our organic farmers to work closely with their Vet according to their individual farm's Livestock Managament Plan.  The SOPA Livestock Management Plan covers feeding, health, stocking densities and veterinary treatments.
