North East Organic Discussion Group – Mini Conference 23rd & 25th March
Tuesday 23rd March 7.30pm - 9.00pm – Carbon Footprinting
An overview of carbon footprinting in agriculture, emissions from organic & non-organic production systems, followed by a discussion of policy & business opportunities for organic production and carbon.
With speakers in Anna Sellars, SAC Consulting rural business consultant who has previously worked for the Organic Research Centre (ORC) and is now involved with AgRE Calc and Dr Laurence Smith, lecturer in agroecology at the Royal Agricultural University, who has focused on greenhouse gas mitigation and also previously worked at the ORC completing his PhD on a comparison of emissions between organic & non-organic farms.
Concluded by speaker David Lawson, a grassland agronomist at SRUC, who will give an update on the potential of grass & clover to produce protein.
There will be time for questions and discussion.
Thursday 25th March 7.30pm - 9.00pm - Organic livestock markets & the value of dynamic health planning
Speaker Lesley Wylie, SAC Consulting livestock team, with experience of the red meat supply chain, advising on nutrition, breeding and marketing, will be discussing available markets, specification & challenges. Followed by Tim Geraghty, SRUC Veterinary Centre Manager Craibstone, looking at dynamic health planning & the organic principles of the integration of livestock health issues with nutrition & management systems and production efficiency.
There will also be a short “ask the vet session”.
