EVENT: North East Organic Discussion Group – Third Meeting

North East Organic Discussion Group – Third Meeting

Date: Wednesday 16th August

Time: 12.30pm to 16.30pm

Location: On-farm discussion at Mains of Thornton Farm, Nr Inverurie, AB51 0JX courtesy of SOPA members Ian Cooper & Partners.

Mains of Thornton, previously the most recent organic monitor farm, is now four years on since the monitor farm project finished and this will be an ideal chance to see/hear how various aspects on farm have developed.

There will be an arable focus to the meeting and the group will take a tour of their seed oats, spring barley, potatoes (let out land) and arable silage, the spent lambs and see the paddock grazing system used for the yearling cattle which has been introduced this year and.  Both Eddie Gauld (organic potatoes) and Alan Mitchell from AA Carrots will be joining the group to give an update about the current opportunities for letting out land for carrots and potatoes.

This will also be an opportunity to have a look through the cattle round house for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet and Aileen Buchanan, Senior Agricultural Consultant, will also go over the soil sampling phosphate results using the two methods (Olsen and Morgan).

The North East Organic Farming Discussion Group has been established and funded through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS), facilitated by SAC.  It is planned that four half day meetings will take place in 2017.

The group is Free to join for existing organic producers and those considering converting their business to organic management within the area.
